Chavanay: Holiday Apartments and Holiday Homes

Culture

Chavanay’s medieval village centre retains a circular layout, remains of towers, tracery windows and winding alleyways. The Chapelle du Calvaire was restored from 2000 to 2003 and is located on the Way of St James. The Madone d’Izerat is a 17-metre-high statue erected in 1861.

The Sainte Agathe church is an old religious building; its bell tower houses the oldest bell in the canton, dating from the 18th century. Chavanay’s heritage trail uses 12 information panels to convey the history of the village and includes the Vieux Moulin and the narrow streets of La Serve.

Wine

The Condrieu wine made from the Viognier grape variety is produced in Chavanay. Saint-Joseph is also produced here; Marsanne and Roussanne are used for the white wines, and Syrah for the red wines. Chavanay’s Marché aux Vins has been held on the second weekend of December since 1924, bringing regional producers together.

Les Vins de Vienne offers a discovery tasting featuring six cuvées at its cellar in Chavanay. There is also a guided tour of the winery and the barrel cellar, followed by an explanatory wine tasting. The Cave Yves Cuilleron has a tasting cellar and offers guided cellar tours by appointment. This tasting cellar is accessible to visitors with mobility impairments.

Maison Boucher offers product tastings at its estate in Chavanay. The house combines the cultivation of apples and pears from the Pilat region and fruit juices with the AOP Saint-Joseph and Condrieu wines. The Distillerie de Chavanay produces its products according to the principles of the Gnôle Naturelle manifesto, using local produce.

Paths

The ViaRhôna runs from Saint-Romain-en-Gal via Chavanay to Sablons. The Les Pèlerins circular hiking trail is offered by the municipality in cooperation with the Parc naturel régional du Pilat and passes the Chapelle du Calvaire and the Chapelle Saint-Basile.

The Sentier des vignobles runs through the vineyards of Chavanay and includes a round trip to the Madone d’Izeras, with views over Chavanay and the Rhône Valley. The signposted Les Vignobles n°1 circular hike starts at the Place de la Halle in Chavanay, is 11.3 km long, takes about four hours and has a moderate difficulty level.

Countryside and Water

The Rebord du Piémont above Chavanay is a viewing point with an open panorama over the Rhône Valley, the vineyards and the urbanised Rhône plain. Chavanay’s river stop offers boaters an opportunity to stay and relax right next to the village.
