Nature and trails
In the village of Chalmazel, there are six routes measuring 4.4, 9.2, 9.6, 14.5, 17.5 and 23 km. There are also three loop trails of 6, 8 and 10.7 km.
The GR®3 crosses the Hautes Chaumes du Forez and runs along the ridges of the Monts du Forez. The La croix du Chatelard loop trail passes through the Lignon Valley and leads to cultural heritage sites around Chalmazel; it starts at the lower edge of the village near the bridge over the Lignon. The Circuit de la cascade loop trail leads visitors to discover the Goure du Phaux waterfall.
Culture and history
The Château des Marcilly-Talaru has stood in Chalmazel since 1231 and preserves a covered defensive walkway and an underground passage. The present-day church building replaced Chalmazel’s former Gothic church in 1881. Chalmazel Church can be visited independently and without a guide.
Activities
Le Roc de l’Olme has 34 granite climbing routes with difficulty levels ranging from 3 to 6c. The Via ferrata du rocher de l’Olme is an easy, 120 m-long route; from the car park, a 20-minute approach through the forest leads to the foot of the rock. Le Roc de l’Olme also offers a children’s via ferrata for participants at least 1.20 m tall.
Local connections
The traditional knowledge surrounding dairy production in Chalmazel is linked to the Fourme AOC zone. Winter tourism in Chalmazel began with the construction of the first ski lift on the Chapouilloux piste in 1953.
