Culture and History

The Chapelle de Pâquier is listed as a historic monument. The Romanesque Chapelle Saint-Christophe de Pâquier was built around the 13th century; its nave and vaulted apse are believed to have been constructed in the 12th century. It is located two kilometres from the village centre in green surroundings. A small cemetery surrounds the chapel and includes, among other graves, that of the sculptor Émile Gilioli.

The Château de Pâquier was possibly built by the Alleman family around 1566. Two tall, narrow windows on its northern façade date from the late 12th century and attest to the building’s medieval origins.

The Atelier Gilioli museum displays the sculpture „Paquier“. The Atelier Gilioli workshop has been preserved since Émile Gilioli’s death in 1977. It houses a permanent exhibition tracing the internationally renowned work of Émile Gilioli and displaying some of his sculptures.

Landscape and Everyday Life

The village of Saint-Martin-de-la-Cluze and its approximately twenty hamlets are spread across beautiful alluvial terraces at an average altitude of 760 metres.

Every other Tuesday, Ecran Vagabond du Trièves organises digital film screenings in the municipal hall „La Dondelle“ in Saint-Martin-de-la-Cluze.

Hiking

A visit to the Atelier-musée Emile Gilioli can be complemented by an approximately 30-minute walk to the Chapelle de Pâquier and its picturesque cemetery.

The „Rando Châteaux – Boucle des trois Châteaux“ hiking route leads to the Chapelle de Paquier and onwards to the Château de Paquier before returning to Saint-Martin-de-la-Cluze. The „Rando Châteaux – Boucle du Château de Paquier“ hiking route leads to the gates of the Château de Pâquier and then returns to Saint-Martin-de-la-Cluze.

Transport

Saint-Martin-de-la-Cluze is easily accessible via the A51 motorway at Exit 13. The village is also served by the Transisère T95 bus route.
