Culture
The Musée de l’Industrie textile illustrates the production process from raw wool to finished textile. It also explores the history of cloth and numerous aspects of the workers’ lives. The Musées de Vienne are spread across four locations and trace the city’s history from the Neolithic period to the 20th century.
Since 1999, the Salle du Patrimoine has presented a permanent exhibition on the urban development of Vienne from prehistory to the present day. The Temple of Augustus and Livia was built around 20–10 BC and dedicated to the worship of Rome and Augustus. The archaeological garden of Cybèle contains the remains of the forum in the institutional district of a Gallo-Roman city. Saint-Maurice Cathedral features a Flamboyant Gothic style.
The Saint-André-le-Bas cloister displays exceptional collections of inscribed gravestones dating from the 5th to the 12th and 14th centuries, respectively. Temporary exhibitions are also held there throughout the year.
City Trails
The Chemins du patrimoine form a 3.5-kilometre circular route. It is marked by nails set into the ground and decorated with an elm tree. Information panels and a free smartphone app explain the architecture and history of Vienne along the route.
The route in the Vallée de Gère is marked by twelve stations with explanations along the way. The orientation trail in the Vallée de Gère leads from the social centre to the Musée de la Draperie and then along the banks of the Gère.
Local Life
Vienne’s market takes place every Saturday in the town centre. It offers delicatessen products as well as local and regional products, and stretches across six kilometres of rows of stalls.
Cycling
ViaRhôna is a 33-kilometre, predominantly flat route between Saint-Romain-en-Gal and Sablons, with only a few sections shared with motor traffic.
