The Bastille was first built at the end of the 15th century and is classified as a historic monument because of its 19th-century military heritage. It has dense vegetation and includes forests, meadows, paths, gardens and ponds. Following a fire on 8 July 2026, access to the Bastille has been regulated since 9 July 2026. The via ferrata at the Bastille runs along the rocky foothills to the walls of the Bastille; it is only a ten-minute walk from the city centre, and the prescribed safety equipment must be worn.
The almost 60-metre-high panoramic terrace of the Tour Perret offers a 360° view of Grenoble and the Vercors, Chartreuse and Belledonne mountain ranges.

Culture and History
The Musée archéologique Saint-Laurent is located in the former parish church of Saint-Laurent, one of the first buildings in France to be classified as a historic monument, and includes a Merovingian crypt. The museum presents almost 2,000 years of Grenoble’s urban history – from the first mausoleums to the 19th-century church.
The Musée Stendhal comprises, as a network, the Gagnon apartment, Stendhal’s birthplace, a historical tour through Grenoble’s old town, and the Stendhal collections of the Study and Heritage Library. The tour through the historic centre of Grenoble identifies around a dozen places from the life of Henri Beyle with bilingual French-English commemorative plaques.
The Saint-Oyand Crypt is considered one of the rare and particularly valuable surviving testimonies to the Early Middle Ages in France.
The Musée de Grenoble brings together collections of ancient, modern and contemporary art. Admission to the Musée de Grenoble’s permanent collection of 900 works is free for everyone.
