Culture and History
The royal bastide in Villeneuve-de-Berg was founded in 1284 through a pariage agreement between Philippe III le Hardi and the Abbé de Mazan. Its historic fortifications include city walls, corner towers and a fortified gate. The Église Saint-Louis was inaugurated in 1297. Inside is a 17th-century altarpiece that was classified as a Monument historique in 1933.
The former Maison du Roy is now the town hall. Prisons that can be visited are located beneath the courtroom. The local religious heritage also includes the Chapelle Notre-Dame du Devois, which is also known as Notre-Dame des 7 Douleurs. It is open daily from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. in July and August.
Nature and Trails
La Forêt des Sens is a 2,100-metre-long, equipped interpretive trail. The route uses the five senses, as well as six information panels, a xylophone and a landscape panel, to explore the area. In addition, the “Voie Royale et crêtes de Berg” circular trail covers 14.5 kilometres. It is of moderate difficulty and takes approximately 4 hours and 30 minutes.
Market in the Town Centre
The weekly market in Villeneuve-de-Berg takes place every Wednesday morning on the main street in the town centre. The traditional market offers products from farmers, livestock breeders and vegetable growers from the surrounding area.
