St. Etienne De Boulogne: Holiday Apartments and Holiday Homes

Saint-Étienne-de-Boulogne has an intercommunal network of hiking trails with white-and-yellow markings and the standardised signage used by the département. A secondary loop of the GRP des Hautes Cévennes connects Ajoux and Saint-Étienne-de-Boulogne over two days via the Col de l’Escrinet and the Col de Sarrasset.

At the Col de l’Escrinet, the “de l’Hirondelle au Sanglier” discovery trail introduces visitors to the local fauna and flora in a fun way. Access is free of charge; guided visits are available for groups. The “autour de la Roche de Gourdon” guidebook also presents eight circular routes, ranging from family-friendly walks to challenging hikes.

The geological educational trail at the foot of the Roche de Gourdon passes through chestnut groves and pastureland, leading from a Mediterranean environment into a mountain landscape while presenting the surrounding scenery.

History and Religious Sites

The summit of the Roche de Gourdon was the site of a fortified oppidum from the 7th or 6th century BC and later of a small temple. Human use continued until the 7th century.

A pilgrimage to Notre-Dame-de-Pramailhet still takes place on the first Sunday in September. The pilgrimage chapel has existed since the late Middle Ages and was rebuilt in the 19th century after the pilgrimage was revived.

The present-day Saint-Étienne church is neo-Gothic and was built at the end of the 19th or beginning of the 20th century on the site of an older church. Nine capitals, as well as Romanesque buttresses and window openings from the former church, have been preserved there.

Historical Traces

The Gare des Clapès railway station and its water tower are located on the former Le Pouzin–Les Vans railway line. The tunnel beneath the Escrinet has been preserved, but is not accessible for safety reasons.

The Auberge du Moulin Artige was built in the 17th century and extended in the 19th century. Before the advent of the railway, it served as a relay station for stagecoaches travelling between Aubenas and Privas.

Since the 17th century, fifteen stone or metal crosses have been erected in the hamlets of the commune, mainly on the occasion of processions or to create places of worship. The manor house of La Combe was built for the most part in the 17th century.

Local Life

The Guinguettes de la Biquette are a recurring summer event in the village: every Thursday in July and August from 6:30 p.m., they host a market featuring local producers and craftspeople, open-air concerts, and food offerings.

The Brasserie de l’Escrinet in Saint-Étienne-de-Boulogne brews craft beers from the Ardèche.
