The easy Privas–Le Montoulon circular trail takes about one hour, is 1.8 kilometres long and has an elevation difference of 102 metres uphill and 101 metres downhill. At Montoulon, it offers panoramic views over the Privas basin and its surroundings. Montoulon is an exposed basaltic volcanic plug associated with the volcanism of the Coirons, which was active between 8 and 5 million years ago.

Routes

The Voie douce de la Payre is a safe, 20-kilometre-long greenway connecting Privas with Le Pouzin along a former railway line. It is accessible to pedestrians, cyclists, families and people with reduced mobility. Numerous rest areas, viewpoints over the Payre Valley, cool tunnels and a playful experience for children are part of the route.

Culture

The Route des Dragonnades can be explored on foot, by mountain bike, by car or by bicycle via an adapted route. It follows the former royal road of the Boutières, which was opened in the 17th century as part of the programme initiated by Louis XIV to suppress Protestant resistance.

The virtual tour of Privas is available year-round in French, English and German. Guided discovery tours are regularly offered in Privas in July and August; upon request, they are also possible during the rest of the year.

Culinary delights

The Castagnades in Privas continue the tradition of chestnut festivals that have been celebrated there since 1945. Their programme includes chestnut tastings – from traditionally roasted chestnuts to original culinary creations – as well as the marking of chestnuts as a convivial local tradition.

The company Clément Faugier was founded in 1882 and continues to be headquartered in Privas; the famous crème de marrons was created there. Marrons glacés are enjoyed in Privas all year round in various forms and are considered a symbol of the town.
