Saint-Jean-Le-Vieux: Holiday Apartments and Holiday Homes
Saint-Jean-le-Vieux lies at the transition between the coastal landscape of Bugey and the Ain plain, resulting in a landscape with two distinct parts.
Culture and History
The façades and roofs of the Château de Varey were entered into the register of historic monuments by decree of 21 March 1983. The former fortress has retained its layout, the lower part of the walls, several sections of medieval towers and defensive walls, as well as a gateway. The Château de Varey overlooks the Ain plain and controls the entrance to the Oiselon Gorge. At the Château de Varey, visitors can freely walk along the rampart walk beside the former fortification walls, starting from the small Marian oratory.
The Saint-Jean-Baptiste Church was built at the beginning of the 15th century, between 1420 and 1430. It contains the 19th-century painting “Baptême du Christ”. The Chapelle Saint-Hubert has a stone holy-water font dating from 1588 and is believed to date from the 12th century. Another artistic reference is the work “Paysage en Bugey, le château de Champollon (Saint-Jean-le-Vieux)” by Antoine Duclaux.
Landscape
The Roche Fendue is a 100-metre-long rock fissure covered with rubble. The Allée des trois châteaux ends at a viewpoint with a 360-degree panorama of the foothills of the Jura.
Things to Do
Saint-Jean-le-Vieux is served by the departmental roads D36, D12 and D63. A local hiking trail leads to the Roche Fendue. A second local hiking trail offers the opportunity to discover châteaux, bourgeois residences and the surrounding landscape. Several specially marked mountain-bike trails are available in Saint-Jean-le-Vieux.
Local Character
Saint-Jean-le-Vieux is one of the ten municipalities in the Bugey Cerdon AOC zone.
