Geographical setting

The Pont des Pierres connects Montanges and Confort and crosses the Valserine at a height of 80 metres. The bridge was built in 1910 for the tram connection from Bellegarde to Chézery and rebuilt in concrete in 1954 after it had been destroyed during the Second World War. When it was built, it was considered the highest masonry bridge in the world.

The Valserine flows below Confort. Within the village, the pedestrian Pont de Confort crosses the river. At La Mêlée des eaux, the Valserine and the Semine meet. This confluence can be reached via the Sentier de Coz and is regarded as a place well known to walkers.

Nature

In October 2014, the Valserine became the first river to receive the Site Rivières Sauvages designation. The designated section extends from the source to Les Pertes, covers 46 of the total 47.6 kilometres, and has a natural geomorphological functioning throughout this entire section.

The Galerie du Pont des Pierres is located in the municipality of Montanges on the border with Confort. It forms part of the Réserve naturelle régionale de la galerie du Pont des Pierres (FR9300066) and the Natura 2000 site Galerie à chauves-souris du Pont des Pierres (FR8201648). The gallery is currently closed to the public for safety and conservation reasons.

History and culture

Confort is also associated with SÅ“ur Rosalie Rendu: she was born in Confort in 1786 and beatified by Pope John Paul II in 2003. Along the Voie du Tram, information panels explain the history of the tramway to hikers.

Confort also lies on the Way of St James to Santiago de Compostela.

Routes

The Voie du Tram is designated as a 19-kilometre round-trip route with a duration of 6 hours 30 minutes and 1,118 metres of ascent. On the section between Lancrans and Confort, modules specifically installed for mountain bikes are available.

The La vallée de la Valserine hiking loop passes through Confort. It is designated as a moderately difficult 17-kilometre route with a duration of 5 hours 30 minutes and 252 metres of ascent.

The climb from Confort to the Col de Menthières is 9 kilometres long, has 578 metres of elevation gain, and an average gradient of 6.2 percent. The route to the Col de Menthières from Confort follows a rural road towards the pass. Various hiking routes are available in Confort on foot, on horseback, and by bicycle.
