Chevillard is one of the municipalities in which the 622-hectare Forêt domaniale de Meyriat is located. Protected species found in the Forêt de Meyriat include lynx, wildcat, common buzzard, Tengmalm's owl and black woodpecker. The Sapin Président can be reached via the paths in the Forêt de Meyriat; the tree is approximately 40 metres tall and around three centuries old. The signposted Circuit de la Correrie is located in the Forêt de Meyriat and is suitable for families.
Landscape
Chevillard belongs to the Val du Borrey/Oignin (South) landscape unit. It is classified as “Paysages ruraux patrimoniaux” and is characterised by cattle farming and forestry, as well as pastureland, wooded ridges and scattered limestone rocks. Chevillard lies amid meadows surrounded by extensive silver fir forests.
Paths and Routes
The Forêt Communale de Chevillard overlaps with four protected areas. GR, PR and local hiking trails have been mapped for it; elevation profiles and GPX downloads are also available. Walking routes lead from Chevillard's lanes towards Chamoise.
A cycle loop reaches the Col de Belleroche at an altitude of 1,056 metres. The “Plateau de Brénod, de combes en cols” cycle loop passes through Chevillard.
Culture and History
Chevillard shares the history of the Chartreuse de Meyriat with Brénod, Condamine and Vieu-d'Izenave. Chevillard was once a hamlet of this charterhouse. The nearby ruins of the Chartreuse de Meyriat are open daily year-round and freely accessible. A guided tour of Chevillard, organised by the Le Dreffia association, was scheduled for 8 August.
