Culture and History
The Maison des Brahelis is a village house dating from the late 16th century. Parts of the building were constructed using timber framing with clay infill, while others were made of rammed earth; the house is surrounded by an open gallery on three sides. It belonged to a significant agricultural estate that was farmed until 1962.
Biziat’s church is first mentioned in 875. Its stained-glass work includes a window in the Église Saint-Clair depicting Saint Joseph, created by the Lyon-based glass painters Pare and Aubriot. Five decorative windows in the nave, as well as the upper section of window 8 in the Église Saint-Clair, were created in 1919 by Bessac of Grenoble. The most significant stained-glass window in Biziat’s church depicts the Resurrection of Christ.
The Moulin de Péroux is also connected with the region’s history: it lies mostly within the municipality of Biziat and has an ancillary building in Vonnas. Around 1900, the mill was acquired by a company and converted into a power station. The former power station was the first to supply Vonnas, Neuville and Châtillon-sur-Chalaronne with electric light.
Routes and Activities
Biziat has numerous routes and paths for hiking, cycling and horseback riding. The mountain-bike circuit starts at Place de la Mairie and includes a 13-kilometre variant, initially marked green and then red. There is also a 10-kilometre variant marked exclusively in green.
The leaflet “Sur les chemins de randonnées au coeur de la Veyle” was produced by the Communauté de communes des Bords de Veyle. It is available from the Biziat town hall secretariat and the Vonnas tourist office.
Farms and Regional Products
At Ferme du Marronnier in Biziat, organic vegetables are sold directly from the farm. Earl du Lavoir – Maison Deroche offers tourists farm tours on request. Every December, the business takes part in the competitions of the Glorieuses de Bresse, and in April it participates in the open-farm event “l’Ain de ferme en ferme”.
Through short distribution channels, Earl du Lavoir – Maison Deroche sells processed Bresse poultry products, including rillettes, galantines and Bresse chicken in a cream sauce. Les Bonbons du Moulin in Biziat offers handmade chouchous, jelly sweets, fruit pastes and honey lollipops.
The Les Bonbons du Moulin shop is currently being renovated. Sales take place online, at markets and through a network of retailers.
