Culture and History
At the Musée archéologique, the double-headed Hermes represents the symbol of the city of Fréjus. The museum is housed in the rooms of the episcopal complex of Fréjus and provides insights into the Roman era as well as the millennia-old cultural heritage.
The Roman heritage also includes the Amphitheatre of Fréjus, which is dated to the last quarter of the 1st century and the last quarter of the 2nd century. The Roman aqueduct of Fréjus carried water through the landscape to the city.
The Cloître de Fréjus preserves painted ceilings from the 14th century, which are considered unique in France. The Villa Aurélienne has been classified as a historic monument since 1989 and houses temporary exhibitions as well as cultural events throughout the year. It is surrounded by a 24-hectare park containing the remains of a Roman aqueduct from the 1st century AD.
Nature and Coast
The Étangs de Villepey are a protected area within the municipality of Fréjus. The protected area covers 263.91 hectares and is open to the public. Boardwalks, walkways and observation points enable visitors to explore sensitive habitats there.
At various times of the year, 220 bird species have been recorded at the Étangs de Villepey. In addition to the wetlands, the focus is therefore also on the seasonal changes in birdlife observed there.
The beaches stretch for 8 kilometres between Fréjus and Saint-Aygulf. This includes one of the largest unspoilt beaches in the east of the Var département, bordered by a strip of dunes. At Plage de la Base Nature François Léotard, there are 2 kilometres of fine sandy beach.
