Culture and History

The Musée national de la Marine in Toulon was the first maritime museum to open in France; it opened in 1814 at the Arsenal of Toulon. The collection presents models, mock-ups, relief maps, paintings, and scientific instruments relating to the human and technical history of the arsenal, as well as the military fate of the port of Toulon.

The Musée des arts asiatiques is located in the Villa Jules Verne on Toulon's Frédéric Mistral waterfront, near Fort Saint Louis. Its permanent exhibitions are organized according to geographical origin. On the heights of Toulon, the Mémorial du Débarquement et de la Libération en Provence commemorates the operation of 15 August 1944; a permanent exhibition presents the events of the landing and the consequences of this operation.

Nature and Trails

The Téléphérique du Faron connects Toulon with the summit of Mont Faron at an altitude of 584 metres, which can be reached in six minutes; the cable car also provides access to the hiking trails on Mont Faron.

The Métropole's Sentier du Littoral comprises 17 different routes along 47 km of coastline; one of these routes passes through Toulon and forms part of the “Sur les traces des contrebandiers” trail there.

Coast and Landscape

The Plages du Mourillon comprise four coves, 19 hectares of which are designated for swimming. Anse Méjean has a beach with white sand and fishermen's huts.

The Parc paysager de la Tour Royale features paths, trees, and an exhibited submarine, and offers views of the large bay of Toulon.

Cuisine

The Marché du cours Lafayette in Toulon's old town stretches for one kilometre and offers food in the mornings and a fair in the afternoons. One stall sells Cade, a Toulon speciality made from chickpea flour and baked over a wood fire. The market also offers fruit, vegetables, olives, cheese, cured meats, fresh fish, and spices.
