History and culture in Brignoles

The town center of Brignoles has been classified as a Remarkable Heritage Site since June 20, 2020. This classification is based on a ministerial decree dated June 15, 2020. At the Palais des Comtes de Provence, visitors can trace the transformation of a building: it was initially designed as a defensive structure and was converted into a count's residence from the mid-13th century onward.

The Musée des Comtes de Provence displays, among other things, the sarcophagus of La Gayolle. The museum is currently closed for renovation work. Another sightseeing option is the Micro-Folie, which offers both self-guided visits and conference-style guided tours.

The townscape also contains distinctive historic details. Brignoles has gates and gateways dating from the 13th and 14th centuries. Older streets with steps and vaulted passages run through the historic center. These old streets can be explored on foot to experience traces of Brignoles' long history. Bilingual signs in Provençal and French have also been installed at the town entrances.

Chapels, dolmens and challenging paths

The Chapelle Notre-Dame d’Espérance has a bronze and iron bell dating from 1556, which was classified as a Historic Monument in 1982. From the Sant Sumian parking area, the chapel can be reached on foot via a steep path; access is not suitable for people with reduced mobility. All services at the Monastère Saint-Benoît are open to the public.

North of the Carami Valley, the dolmens form a Neolithic funerary landscape in which several dolmens were erected. The path there is very steep, so hiking or mountain shoes are recommended.

Discover Brignoles by bike

For a relaxing bike ride, the very easy, 20.5-kilometer cycle route Vélo Vigne & Abbaye is available. It starts at the tourist office at Carrefour de l'Europe in Brignoles and passes through the Vallon de Pourraque, the Val de Camps plain and vineyard landscapes.

The Hameau des Censiés cycling loop runs between vineyards, patches of woodland, olive trees and small streams, and offers views of Montagne de la Loube. The Du train à la mine cycle route leads from Brignoles along the former railway line to the Musée des Gueules Rouges in Tourves. The different route profiles provide guidance on whether you would prefer to plan an easy loop, scenic experiences or a route with a historical connection for your trip.

Market and special events

A market takes place every week in the center of Brignoles. There, you can meet local producers and discover their craftsmanship.
