The history of Saint-Pierre-de-Maillé dates back to prehistoric times: the Grotte des Cottès and its slope form one of the few archaeological sequences in Western Europe to fully cover the end of the Middle Palaeolithic and the beginning of the Upper Palaeolithic, around 35,000 to 37,000 years ago.
The architectural history is also present. The Château de la Guitière was built in the 14th century and remodelled over the following centuries. The entire complex, comprising the residential building, greenhouse, outbuildings, entrance gate, enclosure, towers and chapel, was listed as a historic monument by decree of 5 December 2007. The north pavilion of the Château de Jutreau dates from the 15th century and was listed as a historic monument by decree of 17 April 1935.

Nature
On the eastern edge of the municipality of Saint-Pierre-de-Maillé, at La Guignoterie, there is a cliff dating from the Upper Jurassic that overlooks the left bank of the Anglin. The La Guignoterie area is part of the Natura 2000 network and contributes in particular to the protection of biodiversity and bats. The climbing area comprises 20 sectors and 141 routes on cliffs up to 35 metres high; it is suitable for beginners as well as experienced climbers.
Hiking and Cycling
The “De Grottes en Châteaux loop no. 5” circular hike in Saint-Pierre-de-Maillé is an easy 6.8-kilometre loop with a walking time of approximately 1 hour 30 minutes. It starts and ends in Le Bas Bourg in Saint-Pierre-de-Maillé, initially follows the Gartempe and then climbs uphill through the forest.
The “Gare à la Trempette!” Tèrra-Aventura route is a free treasure hunt in Saint-Pierre-de-Maillé that is accessible to everyone. At the same time, it is a 15-kilometre cycling tour along the Gartempe, using greenways and small roads. The route is accessible all year round.
