Nature

Mauprévoir’s water network comprises the Clain and Payroux rivers as well as numerous permanent or intermittent streams, including the Arquetan and Maury; the Clain crosses the municipality from south to north.

A total of 55 bodies of water have been recorded in Mauprévoir, enabling the development of distinctive animal and plant life.

The communal lake is located 500 metres from the town centre and offers several walking trails in a tree-lined setting.

The communal lake is accessible with pushchairs and has a children’s playground. There are also picnic tables, tennis courts and a pétanque court.

Circular trails

The Au temps d’Aliènor walking route, circular trail no. 8, is a moderately difficult 11-kilometre loop taking 2 hours and 30 minutes. It follows paths through the countryside and along a former railway line, showcasing Mauprévoir’s heritage.

The themed circular trail Les confidences de Mauprévoir passes through the town centre and offers the chance to discover the flower-decorated village of Mauprévoir, which has been awarded two flowers.

Culture

The Château de Mauprévoir retains a fortified châtelet with two towers and a residential building with three towers. The Château de Mauprévoir was surrounded by moats fed by the Payroux; a drawbridge with a double portcullis led across them.

The Église Sainte-Impère is mentioned in 1096 in a papal bull issued by Urban II as a church dependent on Charroux Abbey. The present building was constructed in the 11th century and renovated in the 19th and 20th centuries; the nave, bell tower and part of the choir walls remain from the Romanesque building.

The Fontaine du mal des yeux in La Gannerie still exists; formerly, it was associated with local pilgrimages seeking cures for eye problems.

The Romanesque chapel of L’Âge Pariolle has a square floor plan; the prayer room is on the first floor and is covered by a barrel vault.

The former lime kilns of L’Âge Pariolle are still visible and are approximately twenty metres high.

The Château de Chemouteau contains a Romanesque capital and a 12th-century high relief depicting Jonah emerging from the whale’s mouth; both have been protected as historic monuments since 1945.

Other destinations include Saint-Gervais-les-Trois-Clochers, Coussay-Les-Bois, Ternay, Chauvigny, Magné, Saix, Naintré and La Roche-Rigault.
