Culture and History
The former Saint-Martin church was the village’s first church and dates back to 1099. Its bell tower rests on two round-arched barrel vaults. By decree of 14 April 1951, the former church was listed as a historic monument.
The Église Notre-Dame de Coussay is a 12th-century Romanesque church in the Poitevin style, built from local tuff stone. Its nave is vaulted with domes, making it the only church in Poitou with this feature.
The Château de la Vervollière was built at the end of the 15th century and belonged to the family of Cardinal Richelieu. By decree of 30 July 1920, it was classified as a historic monument. The Château de la Vervollière is also a discovery point on the official cycling route Dans les Vallées de la Luire.
Nature
The Forêts de la Guerche et de la Groie ZNIEFF area includes the municipality of Coussay-les-Bois. It is considered a Central Atlantic, acid-soil oak forest, partly replanted with conifers and including heathland with heather and gorse. The area is of ornithological interest for breeding diurnal birds of prey and breeding populations of black woodpeckers and middle spotted woodpeckers.
Hiking
The Chemin des Rabottes passes through forests, meadows and rural cultural heritage in peaceful landscapes typical of the north of the Vienne département. Along the route, visitors can discover diverse fauna and flora, as well as the local minor heritage, including wells, crosses, walls and old farmhouses.
