Poitiers reveals its history at the present-day Saint-Pierre Cathedral: it was rebuilt from the mid-12th century onwards and has a completely flat, 40-metre-high choir end. The choir stalls dating from the mid-13th century are the oldest surviving choir stalls in France; they comprise 74 oak seats arranged in two rows.
The Palais des Comtes de Poitou-Ducs d’Aquitaine is part of the medieval heritage and is one of the largest civic ensembles of the Middle Ages in Europe. The Baptistère Saint-Jean contains an octagonal baptismal font that was used for baptisms by immersion until the 8th century. A collection of Merovingian sarcophagi is also exhibited there. The Baptistère Saint-Jean is considered the oldest surviving Christian religious building in Europe.
The Musée Sainte-Croix stands on the site of the former Sainte-Croix Abbey. It preserves the third-largest public collection of works by Camille Claudel.
Notre-Dame-la-Grande is closed to the public for restoration work from the end of September 2024 until May 2027.
