Culture and History

One of Civray’s prominent cultural landmarks is the Église Saint-Nicolas. The church was built in the second half of the 12th century and features a screen façade.

Since 17 September 2003, the Musée Municipal de Civray has held the designation “Musée de France” under French heritage law. It contains an interesting local archaeological collection from the Magdalenian period; its collections also cover national archaeology from prehistory to the Gallo-Roman era.

Another historic building is the Hôtel de la Prévôté, a Renaissance mansion that accommodated Louis XIII and his young wife in 1616.

The Micro-Folie de Civray offers virtual reality with headsets as well as a Fab Lab with a 3D printer and embroidery machine. It also presents artworks on a large screen and on tablets.

Nature

The La Plage leisure centre and Île Foin can be reached from Civray town centre in around ten minutes on foot via a path along the Charente.

Île Foin has a fitness trail as well as information boards about the local fauna and flora. It also features fishing jetties accessible to people with reduced mobility.

Events

La Margelle’s cultural season runs from October to June. In Civray, La Margelle offers a varied cultural programme featuring dance, comedy, music and theatre.

The Au Fil du Son festival takes place in central Civray, on the banks of the Charente, on the last weekend of July.
