Le Beugnon: Holiday Apartments and Holiday Homes
Geographical location
Le Beugnon is the source of two rivers: the Thouet rises in Le Beugnon, as does the Sèvre Nantaise. Anyone considering Le Beugnon as a destination may wish to rent a holiday apartment.
Routes
A 33-kilometre cycling loop bears the name “Le Grand Pignon”. For shorter explorations, the “Aux sources du Thouet” circular route starts at the church square. It is 11 km long, takes around three hours and is marked in yellow. The Grotte Notre-Dame-de-Lourdes is also located along the route. In addition, visitors can discover the former Gallo-Roman route, locally known as the “chemin des Chaussées”.
Culture
The Church of Saint-Maurice replaced the former church, which stood above the Fontaine de la Louve on a rocky steep slope. The valley of the Fontaine au Loup stream is included in the “Le Beugnon – Le ruisseau de la Fontaine au Loup” hiking trail. In the area around the hamlet of Château Chardon, wheel ruts carved out by the Romans can still be seen.
The Rocher Chardon also reveals a geological detail: the rock consists of rhyolite, which crumbles into talc-like dust when crushed. The “Beniña onda, clle dau sources” interpretation centre explains how the beneficial springs of the Gâtine are formed.
Nature
The area around the sources of the Thouet has been designated a “Sensitive Natural Area”. Protecting the sources makes it possible to observe the ecosystem there.
