History and Culture

Before 1914, Moussy-sur-Aisne and Verneuil-Courtonne belonged to the same parish but formed separate municipalities. During the offensive of 16 April 1917, Moussy and Verneuil lay below Mont de Beaulne on the front line.

The Church of Saint-Ferry-et-Saint-Ferréol in Verneuil has an imposing bell tower with several openings in Gothic arches. The Church of Saint-Jean-Baptiste in Moussy is considered simpler and more massive than the church in Verneuil.

The Church of Saint-Jean-Baptiste houses a wooden sculpture entitled “Christ aux liens”, carved and painted in the 16th century. This sculpture is protected as a movable object under the French system for the protection of historic monuments.

Moussy-Verneuil is one of today’s municipalities whose name retains part of the designation of a former annexed village.
