Culture and Pilgrimage
The Basilica of Notre-Dame was classified as a historic monument by a decree dated 20 December 1920. The construction of its rood screen was decided on 13 April 1616. Various religious events take place on the esplanade throughout the year.
A 90 m² fresco in the Santa Casa Chapel recounts the legend of the three knights Jehan, Hector and Henri, as well as Princess Ismérie. The story is associated with the Black Madonna, the miraculous spring and the pilgrimage to Notre-Dame de Liesse. The Fontaine Miraculeuse can still be seen today at the entrance to Liesse-Notre-Dame from the direction of Laon. A small chapel was built there, its interior reconstructed based on the Santa Casa in Loreto, Italy, and blessed on 16 August 1857.
Townscape and History
The half-timbered house Maison en pan de bois at 7–9 rue du Général-de-Gaulle was built at the end of the 15th or beginning of the 16th century. Its façades and roofs were partially listed as historic monuments by a decree dated 14 March 1996.
Peat was once extracted from the Grand Marais de Liesse for heating and powering machinery.
Nature and Trails
The Marais de la Souche Natura 2000 site covers 3,000 ha and is designated both as a Special Protection Area (SPA) and as a Special Area of Conservation (SAC). Today, the Marais de Liesse are a protected natural area with exceptional fauna and flora in northern France.
The Le Bois Semé hiking trail begins at the Basilica of Notre-Dame de Liesse and passes through the Grand Marais, the Marais Saint-Boëtien and the Bois Semé. The La Montinette mountain-bike circuit is an easy route around the Marais de la Souche and runs through woodland and marshland.
The Saint Boëtien hiking trail passes on its return through the Marais de la Souche, parts of which are designated as a nature reserve, and into the peatlands of the Marais Saint-Boëtien. The Chemin Reims-Liesse pilgrimage trail leads to Liesse.
Transport
The Hauts-de-France regional transport network serves Liesse-Notre-Dame, with stops at Place Bailly and on Rue Abbé Duployé.
