Bouconville-Vauclair was completely rebuilt at the exact location of the former municipality. The history of the place includes Vauclair Abbey, a Cistercian abbey founded in 1134 by Saint Bernard in the Vauclair Forest. Following the severe damage sustained during the battles of the First World War, only the ruins of the abbey remain. A medicinal herb garden was created on the site of the former pharmacy of Vauclair Abbey.

Nature
The Vauclair medicinal herb garden contains 400 medicinal plants arranged in a chequerboard pattern. The garden also includes a heritage orchard with old varieties of apples and pears. Vauclair State Forest covers more than 1,000 hectares and is criss-crossed by numerous signposted trails.

At the entrance to the site, the tourist pavilion serves as a reception and interpretation area for visitors.
Trails
The “Autour de l’Abbaye de Vauclair” circular trail is an easy 1.2 km route that takes about 20 minutes. It is accessible to people with reduced mobility. The L’Argentel circular trail runs entirely through Vauclair State Forest and around the former Vauclair Abbey. The Ailette Greenway leads directly to the Vauclair medicinal herb garden. The “Le Chêne Cuif” walk begins at the car park of the Vauclair Abbey recreation area.
