Culture

The Church of Saint Remi has a Latin-cross floor plan, with a narthex, a nave of three bays, a slightly projecting transept, and a straight-ended choir. The former medieval Church of Saint Remi was completely destroyed at the end of the First World War; reconstruction work on the church resumed in May 1938.

Remembrance and History

The British military cemetery of Vendresse is the final resting place of 728 British soldiers. It is freely accessible from sunrise to sunset and is located on the D967 between Vendresse-Beaulne and Cerny-en-Laonnois.

The remains of the hamlet of Troyon, which was not rebuilt, include a cemetery and a farm. As a memorial, the municipal council decided to erect a Calvary with a simple plaque in the hamlet’s cemetery.

Chivy, a hamlet dependent on the municipality of Vendresse-Beaulne, was not rebuilt. The Chapel of Saint Peter in Chivy dates from 1927 and was built in memory of the inhabitants of the former hamlet. The grounds around the Chapel of Saint Peter preserve traces of the fighting that devastated the sector.

The washhouse, located in an isolated position in the valley, bears a memorial plaque.

Hiking and Landscape

The “Towards the creuttes of Moulins” hike begins at La Malbatie in Vendresse-Beaulne and follows one section each of the long-distance hiking trails GR 142 and GR 12. It connects expansive plateaus with woodland.
