History and culture

The German military cemetery of Viry-Noureuil is located in Viry-Noureuil. In 1919, it was established by the French military authorities as a central cemetery for German war dead. Before that, the dead had been buried provisionally and distributed across 29 parts of the municipality. It is the resting place of 1,613 German war dead from the First World War; the site comprises 1,198 individual graves and two collective graves containing a total of 415 victims.

The Maison aux coquillages in Viry-Noureuil was designed over more than twenty years as Bohdan Litnianski's “ideal garden”. Water and landscape

The Caurois federal body of water is located in the municipality of Viry-Noureuil between Tergnier and Chauny. It was artificially created and covers approximately 12 hectares.

A no-kill rule applies when fishing at the Caurois federal body of water, requiring all fish caught to be released. Fishing with a float tube is also permitted there.

Nature

The Étangs de Viry were created at former sand extraction pits, which later became ponds used by wildlife.

Numerous bird species can be observed at the Étangs de Viry, including whinchats, shrikes, pipits, warblers and corncrakes.

The Étangs de Viry are suitable for walks around the ponds on foot or by VTC bicycle.
