Culture and History

The church of Berny-Rivière is a Romanesque building that was remodelled in 1552 and restored in 1604 after being damaged during the Huguenot Wars. By decree of 15 June 1927, it was listed as a historic monument.

The historic building heritage also includes the chapel with the bas-reliefs of the Carrière de Chapeaumont. By decree of 17 July 2000, it was listed as a historic monument.

The underground chapel of Chapeaumont was built by combatants in three construction phases: in June 1916, autumn 1916 and January 1917.

Among the approximately thirty underground chapels still preserved that were built by combatants during the First World War, the Chapel of Chapeaumont is considered the most spectacular in terms of its dimensions, layout and quality of execution.

The former quarries known as the Carrières de l’Infirmerie et du Premier Zouave date back to the Middle Ages and served as accommodation or billets for French troops from September 1914 to November 1918. Numerous sculptures of soldiers and regimental inscriptions have been preserved in the quarries.

Nature and Trails

Le bois de Chapeaumont is a 5.9 km circular hiking route that begins in Berny-Rivière.

The long-distance hiking trail GR12 passes through Berny-Rivière and is part of the local network of hiking trails.

From Berny-Rivière, the trail climbs through the Aisne Valley and then leads into the forests of Chapeaumont.
