Culture and history
The Château des Noyers is listed in the supplementary inventory of historic monuments. Its oldest part is an underground area that is believed to be more than 1,000 years old. The Logis de la Barbère is a manor house built in the style of the fortified manor houses of the region, with a corner watchtower and machicolations.
The Logis du Bois Rousseau is a 16th-century manor house with a square courtyard, a round-arched gateway, mullioned windows and two square corner turrets. The building was once surrounded by filled-in moats. The church of Saint-Paul-en-Pareds lies away from the town centre and the château. According to local tradition, this location explains the legend of the Farfadets: these goblins are said to have moved the building stones at night.
The church bell was cast in 1538 and is considered the second-oldest bell in the Vendée. By virtue of a privilege granted by King Charles VII, a market was historically held every Thursday on the esplanade in front of the château, along with fairs on 23 January and 29 August.
Trails and landscape
The Sentier des Noyers is an 11.5 km hiking trail. The Sentier des Farfa'pieds Sud is 5.2 km long and is the shortest of seven trails in Saint-Paul-en-Pareds. On the trail of the amazing characters is a 79 km hike that passes through Saint-Paul-en-Pareds.
The Sentier du Boistissandeau, circuit no. 6, is a marked 9.2 km trail. It runs through the Petit Lay valley alongside a pond. A former watermill, which ceased operating in 1938, stands along this trail. A small chapel on the Sentier du Boistissandeau is dated to 1657.
The Sentier du Chevalier du Landreau begins at the L'Acheneau picnic area. Five shaded tables and toilets are available there. Along the trail, a bridge crosses the Petit Lay.
