The Passage du Gois connects Barbâtre with the mainland near Beauvoir-sur-Mer. The tidal crossing, which can be driven and walked across at low tide, is located in the Bay of Bourgneuf and is 4.5 kilometres long. It can be crossed by car and on foot from about one and a half hours before until one and a half hours after low tide; at high tide, it is submerged. Since 6 November 2017, it has been designated a site of national and historical interest.

Nature and trails

The Polder de Sébastopol, a protected regional nature reserve, is located near Barbâtre. The polder offers opportunities for birdwatching and nature walks with the family; 210 resident or migratory bird species from terrestrial, wetland and aquatic habitats can be found there. The polder offers the 3.2-kilometre “Les Portes de l'île” footpath through a protected natural landscape.

The “Les Portes de l'île” walking trail connects the Passage du Gois with the Pont de Noirmoutier and passes the Bay of Bourgneuf and the polder to the east, and dunes and the ocean to the west. The walking trail is 13.4 kilometres long, takes about three hours, has a medium difficulty level and is marked in yellow. The Pinède de Barbâtre covers 145 hectares and is the largest forest on the Île de Noirmoutier. A circular route in the Pinède de Barbâtre is 8 to 10 kilometres long and takes about three hours.

Cycling

The “Entre Gois et forêts” cycle route starts at the Barbâtre Tourist Office. It is 23.3 kilometres long, takes about two and a half hours and has a “Family” difficulty level.
