The Chapelle Saint-Martin is one of the oldest religious buildings in Moulins-le-Carbonnel and features typically Romanesque architecture. It was built at the beginning of the 12th century and preserves several original architectural elements.

Culture and history

The eastern, sealed-up window of the Chapelle Saint-Martin is framed with dark brown Roussard stone, a characteristic local rock. The chapel also contains a stone statue of Saint Stephen dating from the 16th century. Until the end of the Second World War, there was a local tradition whereby newlyweds placed their wedding bouquets at the feet of Saint Martin to protect their marriage and happiness.

The present-day Église Saint-Symphorien was built in 1844 after the previous church building partially collapsed in 1842. Between 1889 and 1893, eleven stained-glass windows were installed in the nave and choir. In 1999, three older stained-glass windows with a total of twelve panels were found in the sacristy attic, bearing the signature of the master glassmaker Antoine Lusson.
