Pirmil: Holiday Apartments and Holiday Homes

The Church of Saint-Jouin in Pirmil was classified as a historic monument by a decree dated 11 December 1912. Protected works of art can also be found inside: the paintings of the altarpiece of Saint Anne and the Marian altarpiece were classified as historic monuments in 1977. The altarpiece of Saint Anne is located on the eastern wall of the northern transept.

Culture and History

The Château de la Balluère lies southwest of the centre of Pirmil, on a slope above the road to Noyen. Its stair tower has been classified as a historic monument since 28 December 1984; its façades and roofs have been listed since the same date. The Château de la Balluère, which remains privately owned, is listed in the historic monuments inventory and is occasionally opened to visitors. The exterior areas and part of the medieval residential building are accessible, including in summer and during the European Heritage Days.

The Château de Cheneru in Pirmil is a 13th-century building associated with stays by the Constable Du Guesclin and King Henry IV. On the difficult-to-access part of the promontory of the Château de Pirmil stands a motte, attesting to its age and former importance. On a steep promontory in front of the centre of Pirmil, there are also remnants of what was presumably once an important feudal fortress.

Landscape

The grounds of the Château-de-Cheneru project cover three hectares of meadows and woodland. A small river on the Cheneru grounds feeds the castle’s moats.

The Château de la Suze-sur-Sarthe, a castle, is located near Pirmil. The Château de Malicorne-sur-Sarthe, also a castle, is likewise located nearby. In the wider region around Pirmil are the Château de Sourches, a castle, and the Abbaye de Solesmes, a monastery.
