Culture

The abbey church (Eglise abbatiale) of Saint-Gildas-des-Bois was built at the end of the 12th century in the Romanesque style, in accordance with the requirements of the Benedictine order, using the iron-rich sandstone known as “roussard”. It can be visited either on a guided tour or independently. Next to the choir of the abbey church stands Le Fruitier, a building erected in 1890 that now serves as an exhibition venue for artists.

History

The Ferme Ecole was founded in 1849 and trained hundreds of young people in agriculture for 25 years. Its chapel was restored with the help of trainees and stonemasons; the eight-metre-high spire was erected in 2009. The Ferme Ecole later became a business producing milk, butter and cheese products; these products were exported to several European countries.

The Calvaire de Bernugat was erected in 1886 on the heights of Bernugat by the priest of Saint-Gildas-des-Bois. On 22 October 1886, three crosses were erected at the Calvaire de Bernugat. A statue of the “Ecce Homo” now stands on the site of one of the former crosses.

Nature

Bernugat offers paths through a pine forest, picnic opportunities and a flooded quarry with blue water beside ochre-coloured rocks. The 96-hectare Bernugat forest includes a fitness trail and games for children. On the Circuit des Pins, after passing the quarry, views of the abbey church tower and the Saint-Nazaire bridge open up in good weather.

Trails

The Circuit des Pins is an easy, 3.6-kilometre circular route with a stated duration of 36 minutes in Saint-Gildas-des-Bois. The Course d’orientation Bernugat offers formats involving a compass, stars, marker searches and points scoring; 20 markers are distributed across three locations. On the Circuit de la Croix-Rouge, you can stop at the Four des Métairies and enjoy a panoramic view over the municipality of Saint-Gildas-des-Bois.
