Mesquer: Holiday Apartments and Houses

The Traict du Rostu is a 126-hectare Natura 2000 site. This protected wetland has an observation post for viewing the wildlife. Typical salt marshes lie in the Bassin du Mès near Mesquer; there, Guérande salt crystallizes under the influence of the tides and wind.

Things to do

The municipality offers the local-history trail “La Vigne – Le Rostu – Mesquer”, which is 9 km long. Another local-history trail, named “le Toul-Ru – Quimiac – Kerguilloté”, covers 8.5 km.

From Plage du Cabonnais et du Lannguy, you can reach the 10-km-long La Pointe de Merquel footpath. The La Pointe de Merquel hiking trail runs past the village and port of Kercabellec and along the coast via the Sentier des douaniers, reaching Pointe de Merquel with its ornithological observatory.

The Golf de Mesquer is a compact, wooded 9-hole course measuring 1,000 m in length and suitable for beginners and experienced players.

Culture and History

The Notre-Dame de Merquel chapel was destroyed in July 1944, faithfully rebuilt five years later, and blessed in 1949. The chapel’s choir contains a fresco by Canon Pierre Bouchaud; a goélette donated by Joseph Judic also commemorates the chapel’s maritime orientation.

The Merquel priory was built before 1278 and dedicated to Notre-Dame. It was demolished in 1615 on the orders of Louis XIII; its dated buttress was preserved and served as a sea mark for sailors.

Construction work on the Jetée de Merquel began in 1867. In 1920, a light was installed there to secure the entrance to the roadstead, where boats carrying Mesquer salt were anchored.

L’ArtyMès is a venue with an annual cultural programme featuring comedy, music, theatre, circus, and festivals.

Local Life

The recurring “L’Huître en main” event at the Bar à Huîtres in Kercabellec demonstrates oyster opening and, for €7, includes the opening of five oysters with tasting, bread, butter, lemon, shallot vinegar sauce, and a glass of Muscadet.

The recurring Marché du Terroir et d’Artisanat market takes place on Wednesdays in July and August from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Place de Kercabellec. It brings together more than 30 local farmers and producers, craftspeople, and artists; local products can be tasted on site and purchased to take away.
