The Bois de Condeau belongs to the village and extends over 460 hectares on a flint-clay ridge that rises to approximately 215 metres. The soil is relatively dry and acidic. The forest is an oak-beech forest in which sessile oak clearly predominates; sweet chestnut plays an important role in some northern areas.
Nature and Trails
The Bois de Condeau is privately owned. Walkers should follow the marked hiking trails 21, 24, 25, 26, 27, 28, 29 and 31, while the woodland and forest roads are closed to the public.
The “Villeray, au fil de l'Huisne” route follows the Huisne Valley through the village of Condeau and the hamlet of Villeray. Along the relevant section of this route, the Huisne flows quietly through meadows and forests and is deep enough for canoeing or kayaking. The Club de Canoë-Kayak Percheron de Nogent-le-Rotrou offers canoe and kayak trips on the Huisne from Condeau or Condé-sur-Huisne to Nogent-le-Rotrou.
Routes by the Water
The surrounding area can also be explored by bicycle on the “La roue tourne” route: it is an easy 22.6-kilometre circular tour on roads that are 100 percent paved. The route uses a section of the Voie verte Condé–Alençon, which is part of the Véloscénie.
Church and History
The Saint Denis Church in Condeau has a Romanesque apse that is used as a sacristy. Its architecture also includes a four-storey bell tower with a stair turret attached to the side and a chapel at its base. The church contains the painting “La Transfiguration du Christ”, a copy after Raphael, which was classified as a historic monument among the movable objects in 1971. The statue of Saint Dionysius in the Saint-Denis Church in Condeau was listed as a protected object on 14 December 1972.
The Château de Villeray was a fortress under the rule of the Talvas, the lords of Bellême, in the 11th century. As an outpost, it occupied a strategic position from which the Huisne was controlled. The Château de Villeray in Condeau is partially protected as a historic monument.
The Motte castrale de Villeray in Condeau or Sablons-sur-Huisne comprises two fortified structures built by the lords of Bellême on the right bank of the Huisne.
