Culture

The Parc du château des Ravalet is an 18-hectare landscaped park that was redesigned in 1872 as a blend of English and French garden styles. The park is home to one of the few surviving 19th-century rotunda greenhouses in Normandy. In 2004, the Parc du château des Ravalet was also awarded the “Jardin remarquable” designation.

Parks and nature

The Lande Saint-Gabriel in Tourlaville is a 30-hectare natural sports area with views over the city of Cherbourg-en-Cotentin and the sea. Parc Bagatelle is a peaceful, densely planted park bordered by the Trottebec River. Several meadows there invite visitors to picnic or relax; there is also a children’s playground.

Trails and sports

Lande Saint-Gabriel has marked mountain biking trails rated blue, red, and black, as well as a trials course. The area also offers orienteering courses.

The circular trail Les chemins du Becquet is classified as a red route, combines countryside and coast, and starts and ends at the Château des Ravalet. Along the coast, there is also the section of the GR 223 from Tourlaville to Querqueville, known as the Tour du Cotentin. This route is designated as a moderately difficult 16.6 km hike with a stated duration of three hours.

Ports and history

Port des Flamands is a small public port in the roadstead of Cherbourg that is accessible without tidal restrictions, subject to draft. Port du Becquet was built in 1783 between two rocky promontories called “les Becquets”. In 1785, it was the main loading point for stones from the nearby Becquet quarries, which were intended for the construction of the large breakwater in the roadstead of Cherbourg.
