Culture

The Manoir de Gonneville is a historic manor house in Saint-Jacques-de-Néhou. At the Manoir de Gonneville, the façades and roofs of the manor house and the outbuildings enclosing the courtyard, the fireplace in the large room on the ground floor of the Henri-IV pavilion, the fireplace in the right-hand room of the 16th-century building, and the dovecote are listed as historic monuments; the protection was registered by decree of 29 August 1977.

The statue of “Notre Dame de Montront” was classified as a protected cultural object on 7 October 1935.

The Église Saint-Jacques-de-Néhou contains a wooden statue of the Virgin Mary carved around 1300. The Église Saint-Jacques-de-Néhou also contains a holy-water font made of Néhou terracotta from the 19th century, depicting an angel holding a scallop shell.

Ceramics

Saint-Jacques-de-Néhou was part of the pottery centre of northern Cotentin, represented in the inventory by 24 kilns, workshops or potteries.

The zoomorphic jug known as the “pot cochon” was an emblematic product of the Hamel pottery family in Néhou and was made from the second half of the 19th century until the middle of the 20th century. The “pot cochon” was made from brown, gritty clay; a salt glaze gave its surface a shine.

The flower vases from Néhou, made in the village of Mourot, now Saint-Jacques-de-Néhou, are often called “wedding vases” because of their decorative rings; each pot always has four rings.
