Culture and History
Savigny-le-Vieux Abbey was the origin of the Savignac Order. Towards the end of the 12th century, it joined the Cistercian Order. Guided tours of the abbey are offered in summer or on request; at the same time, it is freely accessible all year round.
The church of Savigny-le-Vieux was built in the 11th century. Around fifty different modillions adorn the upper section of its exterior walls. The church is partly supported by two granite columns from Savigny Abbey; their capitals are decorated with vines and grapes.
Church
The church of Savigny-le-Vieux contains an 18th-century cenotaph of Saint Vital. Its front depicts a miracle attributed to him. There is also a cabinet in the style of Louis XIV containing relics of the abbey’s saints. The recumbent effigy tomb of Jean Le Verrier, the 38th abbot of Savigny, is located in the église de la Nativité in Savigny-le-Vieux.
