Nature
The protected area Dunes de Biville includes parts of Vasteville, Héauville, Siouville-Hague and Biville. It covers 341.38 hectares and is open to the public. The dune massif consists of a mosaic of dunes and small bodies of water; its depressions are temporarily flooded every winter. Héauville also has a dune strip approximately 1.2 kilometres long.
The Grand Douet flows into the sea near Héauville. Its riverside woodland in Vasteville and Héauville is a priority habitat in the dune area.
Trails and landscape
Several routes take in the landscape around Héauville. On the return journey, the Siouville-Hague heritage trail follows the Chemin du Seuil and offers views of the Héauville dune massif. The “Entre landes et dunes” route runs from the harbour quays of Port Diélette to the Héauville dune massif, crossing bocage landscapes and wild heathlands along the way.
On higher-elevation paths, the GR223 offers views of barchan dunes and wet dune depressions.
History and architectural heritage
The oldest parts of the Manoir d’Héauville date back to the 16th century. The façades and roofs of the Manoir de Heauville, excluding the outbuildings, have been partially protected as a historic monument since their listing on 19 November 1976.
The historic architectural heritage also includes the Croix Longue, a granite wayside cross from the 18th century at the junction of the D405 and the church road, as well as the Croix Côme, an 18th-century wayside cross in the hamlet of Riglon on the D37. The parish of the Church of Saint-Germain d’Auxerre in Héauville was founded at the end of the 12th or beginning of the 13th century. The Church of Saint-Germain has a baptismal font with a rectangular basin on a cylindrical base.
The priory of Héauville and the church historically formed a single complex. The priory of Héauville is said to have been founded in 1027 and had only four members of the order.
Geographical setting
The D64 departmental road runs near Héauville and connects La Hague in the north with Siouville-Hague in the south.
