Poilley is closely connected with the Sélune. Along almost two-thirds of Poilley’s municipal boundary, the Sélune forms a natural border and shapes a landscape with numerous meanders around Poilley.
History and Architectural Heritage
The Vieux Pont over the Sélune was built in 1613 and dates from the 17th century. It separates Poilley from Ducey, lies partly within Poilley, and was protected as a historic monument by decree of 19 August 1975.
The former Montmorel Abbey was founded in 1160 by Rual du Homme. The abbot’s house, the remains of the eastern cloister wing, the leprosarium and the mills have been preserved. The surviving grounds are privately owned. The Sélune crosses the grounds of the former abbey or borders them. Parts of the former Montmorel Abbey are protected as a classified and registered historic monument; the corresponding protection orders date from 6 February 1980 and 2 July 2007.
The Church of Saint Martin contains architectural elements from the 12th, 16th and 18th centuries. It houses a 15th-century altarpiece from Montmorel, which was protected as movable cultural property on 13 April 1905.
A former guard post adjoins the bridge; its façades and roofs are protected.
According to tradition, Saint Ortaire was born in 482 in the village of Hermy in Poilley. Local belief holds that the water from the Saint Ortaire spring has healing properties for ailments that impair the life and functioning of the limbs.
Those who have chosen Poilley as their travel destination may wish to rent a holiday apartment.
