History and townscape

The Cabane Vauban is a seaside landmark of Jullouville’s historical and landscape heritage, as well as a testament to Normandy’s maritime and military history. It is integrated into Jullouville’s seafront promenade and routes for exploring the municipality’s cultural heritage, and offers a viewpoint over the bay and the maritime landscape.

The Château de la Mare was built in 1907 as a private residence and is part of Jullouville’s development as a seaside resort at the beginning of the 20th century. In 1944, it became the headquarters of the Allied troops in this sector; from there, General Dwight D. Eisenhower directed some of the military operations associated with the liberation.

Older traces also form part of the townscape: the Menhir de Vaumoisson is a prehistoric megalith and one of the oldest reminders of Jullouville’s past. The seaside resort’s historic layout follows a fan-shaped plan, centred on a casino and a grand hotel.

The Pêcheries of Jullouville are among the characteristic features of the coast. These are traditional V-shaped stone walls that are visible only at low tide. The first Pêcheries in Jullouville appeared in the 15th century and were originally built from wood.

At the Church of Saint-Jean-Baptiste in Bouillon, a small apple tree grows directly from the outer wall on the north side of its bell tower. In 2026, Jullouville will take part for the fourth time in the recurring festival Pierres en lumières. During this event, historic and particularly prominent sites in the town can be discovered in the evening; it takes place on 29, 30 and 31 May 2026.

Nature and trails

The cycling tour Les balcons de la baie passes through the heathland of Saint-Michel-des-Loups, along the Chemin des Monts and past the classified cliffs of Carolles-Champeaux. It offers panoramic views of the Bay of Mont-Saint-Michel. The route also includes a 2.3 km walking detour to the Lande des Cent vergées, designated as a protected natural area.

A stage of the GR® 223 from Bouillon to Genêts offers views of the Bay of Mont-Saint-Michel and the natural panoramas of the Lude Valley. Designated as the GR® 223 Bouillon–Genêts, this moderately difficult hiking stage lists Jullouville as its starting point and is indicated as 20.6 km long. It passes the Port du Lude, where a swimming break is possible, before continuing to the Cabane Vauban.
