Culture and history
The extraction of granite shaped Montfarville’s history and built landscape until the 1970s. During walks, visitors can discover houses, manor houses, farmsteads, lintels, field gates, enclosure walls and distinctive agricultural buildings.
The Church of Montfarville was built in 1763 from local white granite. The vault and the choir were designed in 1879 by the painter Guillaume Fouace from Réville.
Coast and paths
At Plage de la Mare beach, there is a car park with three preferred spaces for people with reduced mobility, as well as a separate parking area for two-wheeled vehicles. The beach can be reached via the GR223 long-distance hiking trail and via Rue de la Côte des Vikings.
Access to Plage de la Mare beach from the coastal path is made easier by transverse steps. The beach is also located near the Vélomaritime–EuroVelo 4 cycle route.
Surroundings
The Fort de la Hougue and the island of Île de Tatihou are located in the vicinity of Montfarville.
In the wider regional area around Montfarville are Plage de la Mondrée, Plage de Bretteville and Plage de Collignon beaches. The Artothèque de Cherbourg, a museum, is also located there. The wider regional area also includes Fort de l'Île Pelée and Fort des Flamands.
Landscape and routes
On several municipal and country paths, known as “chasses”, visitors can discover old calvaries such as Croix Muet. The “De la campagne du Vast aux côtes de Saint-Vaast-La-Hougue” route changes in Montfarville from a section along the river to a coastal section.
