Culture and History

The baptismal fonts in the Église Notre-Dame in Couvains partly date back to the 14th century, but have been extensively restored. They are listed as protected historic objects.

The Église Notre-Dame was partially destroyed in 1944 and rebuilt between 1952 and 1959. The reconstruction was led by architects Jacques Prioleau and Jacques Travers.

On the north side of the Église Notre-Dame are a glass panel and six stained-glass windows by the glass artist Gabriel Loire. In the cemetery surrounding the church stands the Monument aux victimes civiles de Couvains en juin 1944.

The Monument de la Libération commemorates the liberation of Couvains by American troops in June 1944. A historical information panel describes the battles fought by the 29th US Infantry Division. One memorial plaque is dedicated to Technical Sergeant Frank Peregory, while another honors Lieutenant Charles Curley.

In the hamlet of Les Foulons west of Couvains, a memorial plaque commemorates Private Harold Shillingburg.

Surroundings

The Château de Mesnilville in Couvains is one of the key sites in the Bocage Saint-Lois that have been highlighted in depictions and tourist guidebooks since the 19th century. At the same time, it is one of the châteaux highlighted in the Bocage Saint-Lois.
