The protected site of Pointe du Brick covers 401.74 hectares and is included in the Natura 2000 site “Caps et marais arrière-littoraux de Barfleur au Cap Lévi”. The landscape also includes the Landes du Brûlé massif, which extends over 330 hectares and is covered with heather, gorse and sea buckthorn.
Protected bats can be found in the Landes du Brick, including the greater horseshoe bat and the greater mouse-eared bat. On the coast lies Anse du Brick, a small wild cove between Maupertus-sur-Mer and Fermanville. Its sandy and pebbly beach is bordered by green cliffs. Anse du Brick is suitable for walks and experiencing natural landscapes.
Hiking on the GR223
The Pointe du Brick circular trail passes through numerous bocage paths in the Maupertus forest and the Brulay heathland. It is classified as a moderately difficult hike covering 6.2 kilometres and taking around two hours.
The Pointe du Brick circular trail runs along the coastal path and follows the GR223 along the coast. Its starting point is the “Maupertus-sur-Mer – Anse du Brick” stop on the Cap Cotentin bus network.
Culture and History
The Manoir de Maupertus can be viewed from the outside. It was built around the 17th century and was always inhabited by farmers. The Manoir de Maupertus is partially protected as a French historic monument; the protection was registered on 30 May 1978.
The Church of Saint Martin in Maupertus-sur-Mer contains a pair of processional lanterns. The pair of processional lanterns has been registered as a protected cultural object since 24 August 1990.
The largest bunker on the Landes du Brûlé was used by the German army during the occupation. Anse du Brick was the site of a granite quarry in the 19th century, and its stone was transported to Lille via the port of Cherbourg.
The menhir on cadastral plot A 668 was classified as a historic monument in accordance with the 1889 list.
