Culture and History
The Church of Saint-Aubin has been protected as a historic monument since 21 June 1927. Its main construction phases date from the 12th, 13th and 14th centuries; the interior also contains two 17th-century altarpieces.
The Church of Saint-Martin was destroyed in 1944. Its remains include a tower dating from the 14th and 15th centuries. The Fontenay-le-Pesnel Commonwealth Cemetery also commemorates the events of this period: it contains 520 graves of British, Canadian and German soldiers and is located at the site of the fighting between the 49th West Riding Division and German units in June 1944. The cemetery is freely accessible all year round.
The grave of the poet Segrais (1624–1701), a member of the Académie Française, is located in Fontenay-le-Pesnel. The village landscape also includes a 19th-century washhouse.
