Couin: Holiday Apartments and Holiday Homes
The Château de Couin is located halfway between the cities of Arras and Amiens and in the heart of the Somme battlefields.
Culture
The Château de Couin is an authentic mid-18th-century residence from the time of Louis XV and is fully protected, including its interior and exterior, as a Monument historique (I.S.M.H.). The estate includes authentic interior and exterior decorations, including sculptures by Adrien-François D'HUEZ and his son Jean-Baptiste Cyprien D'HUEZ.
Visits to the Château de Couin also include the stables, decorated with marble and unique in France. Visits are possible year-round exclusively by prior reservation for groups of 20 or more.
The Church of Saint Peter in Couin houses a polychrome wooden statue of Saint Leonard dating from the 18th century. It was classified as a Monument historique on January 12, 1966.
History
Couin British Cemetery was established in May 1916 by field ambulances of the 48th (South Midland) Division and was used by units and field ambulances during the 1916 Battle of the Somme. It contains 401 Commonwealth burials from the First World War as well as three German graves.
Couin British Cemetery is located beside the road shortly before the entrance to Couin. The site is accessible to wheelchair users, although an alternative entrance may be used.
Couin New British Cemetery contains the graves of 14 men who served in the New Zealand Expeditionary Force during the First World War. The cemetery contains the grave of Sergeant Richard Charles Travis of the New Zealand Expeditionary Force; in the cemetery register, he is listed as Dickson Cornelius Savage and designated “V.C.”
Couin New British Cemetery was opened on the opposite side of the road. From January 1917, it was used by field ambulances—with a longer interruption in 1917–1918—until the end of the war.
On the Way
The “Val d’Authie” cycling route leads to Couin via a gently uphill side road.
