Culture and history
The Noordmeulen, also known as “Moulin du Nord”, is a wooden post mill. During its restoration from 1978 to 1983, the year 1576 was discovered on a beam. The Noordmeulen is one of the two mills in Steenvoorde listed in the supplementary inventory of historic monuments.
Anyone wishing to rent a holiday apartment in Steenvoorde can include the town as a specific destination in their personal travel plans.
Another historic address is the Maison du Coq on Place Saint-Pierre, which dates from 1664 and is listed as a historic monument. The Centre de Ressources Documentaires is open to the public on Wednesdays and Fridays from 9 a.m. to noon and offers numerous materials on the regional languages, including dictionaries, books, audio recordings and films.
The Moulin Drievenmeulen, also known as “Moulin du Sud”, is a wooden post mill dating from 1776. In 1901, it was moved to the municipality of Steenvoorde and converted into a grain mill. The Moulin Drievenmeulen has been listed as a historic monument since 24 October 1977. Its sails, with a span of 24.50 metres, were reinstalled on 18 June 1997 and have been turning ever since.
The three-nave Gothic church was rebuilt in the 16th and 17th centuries and is 92 metres high.
Nature
Aire Nature is a 3.5-hectare biodiversity area in the centre of Steenvoorde and is designated as a Refuge LPO. It is home to diverse wild fauna and flora, including several bird species such as warblers, leaf warblers, reed warblers, green woodpeckers and tits, as well as three species of newt. A pond and the waterways Ey Becque and Rommel becque cross the area.
In cooperation with the LPO, Aire Nature offers a free, permanently installed nature rally.
Getting around
La Ronde des Moulins is a 9.5-kilometre hiking trail that starts at the town hall car park on Place du docteur J.M. Ryckaewert in Steenvoorde.
Steenvoorde is part of the Destination Coeur de Flandre tourism association; the nearest tourist office is in Cassel. In the wider region surrounding Steenvoorde, the node-based cycling network offers 830 kilometres of cycleable routes and enables individually planned itineraries.
Local life
Since March 2025, the Saturday market has been held under the Marchande market hall on Rue de Poperinghe every Saturday from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Steenvoorde’s Saturday market offers fruit and vegetables, dairy products and cheese, waffles, meat, barbecue products and fish.
During the summer carnival on the last weekend of April, six giant figures from Steenvoorde are presented.
