Mont des Cats lies within the municipalities of Berthen and Godewaersvelde. From its 164 m-high summit, hikers can enjoy the hilly landscapes of the Monts de Flandre. Mont des Cats is also home to a 20-hectare wooded massif that invites visitors to stroll in a typically Flemish atmosphere.

Between the village of Godewaersvelde and Mont des Cats Abbey lies the Aire ludique L’Observatoire caché, featuring two land art installations. Visitors can play, climb and observe life in the pond there.

Culture

The Église Saint-Pierre is a neo-Gothic church rebuilt between 1904 and 1906, with interior furnishings by Gustave Pattein. Almost 1,000 servicemen from across the Commonwealth are buried in Godewaersvelde British Cemetery.

Regular traditional festivals enliven village life, including a carnival with a parade and floats. These festivals preserve traditions such as high-standing archery, Flemish bowling and cockfighting.

On request, Godewaersvelde's village guides offer individuals and groups guided tours of the town's sights. A ceremony is held at the Chapelle de la Passion on Good Friday, and continues to attract many people. The religious practice of attaching pieces of fabric from sick people to the railings around Christ's tomb is also still observed there.

The Brasserie Saint-Eloi building documents Godewaersvelde's significant brewing activity at the beginning of the 20th century and its local brewing tradition. The Musée de la Vie Frontalière is housed in Godewaersvelde's former presbytery and explains the historical conflict between customs officers and smugglers.

Local

Mont des Cats Abbey has been home to a Cistercian monastery with around 30 monks of the Trappist tradition since 1826. The Mont des Cats Abbey cheese dairy is now the monastic community's main livelihood; the milk comes from farms in the surrounding area and is supplied by the company Danone from Bailleul. A guided tour of Mont des Cats includes a tasting of two cheeses produced by the monastery.

Calibou & co is located in the centre of Godewaersvelde and combines a bistro with a grocery shop selling local products.
