Culture and History
Saint-Hilaire-sur-Helpe is located on the Chaussée Brunehaut, a Gallo-Roman road between Reims and Bavay. The parish church of Saint-Hilaire has Romanesque origins and was expanded in the 17th century with a side aisle and a false north transept.
In Les Rocs, the Chapelle Sainte-Anne is located on the chemin de Saint-Hilaire à Dompierre. Château Gaillard is a former manor house arranged around a courtyard, which is accessed through a gate tower. The upper part of the gate tower at Château Gaillard houses a dovecote. Château Gaillard is privately owned.
The Church of Saint-Hilaire has a structure dating from the 15th century; its bell tower was rebuilt in 1786, and a second nave was added. Inside are two 17th-century side altars, a 16th-century statue of Saint Etton, statues of Saint Hilary and Saint Guislain from the 18th century, and an icon associated with the Russian occupation.
The 16th-century Moulin de Fucheau, built on older foundations, is one of the oldest mills in the valley and was restored by Charles de Croy in 1598. The Oratoire Sainte-Anne et Sainte-Marie in the hamlet of Les Rocs bears the date 1804 according to the French Revolutionary calendar and is protected as a historic monument.
Hiking and Landscapes
The Circuit de la Buse is a very easy 8.1-kilometre hiking trail with a walking time of around two hours. It starts at Place André Coupillaud, follows small paved roads, and highlights the local bocage landscape and architectural heritage.
In the hamlet of Fucheaux, there is a Roman ford across the Helpe Majeure with numerous remains; it is located on the ancient road between Bavay and Reims.
The Sentier des Chapelles et de la Buse is a 13.60-kilometre circular hiking trail of medium difficulty, with a walking time of approximately 4 hours and 15 minutes and a return to the starting point. It is included in the departmental plan for walking and hiking routes and is marked with yellow trail signs.
The Sentier des Chapelles et de la Buse follows roads lined with hedges and passes meadows along the Helpe Majeure to the Chapelle Saint-Etton.
