Culture and History

The Church of Saint Martin in Massac has medieval origins and was rebuilt from the 19th century onwards. Its side chapels feature stained-glass windows created by Louis Saint-Blancat in 1894; it also preserves a monumental fresco painted by Jacques Bringuier in 1958 depicting events from the life of Saint Martin.

The Congregation of the Daughters of Jesus was founded in 1854 by Abbé Roucou in Massac. From around 1859, the first Sisters of the Daughters of Jesus provided free instruction to children from the surrounding area.

Nature and Trails

The Voie dite Romaine is a hiking trail of départemental interest managed by the Tarn département. It runs along ridges marked by medieval motte castles, underground structures, refuges and silos. The Voie dite Romaine offers wide-ranging views over the Girou and Agout valleys, as well as insights into remarkable wildlife and plant life.

Near Massac, local residents described the so-called Voie dite Romaine as a route averaging 11 metres in width and divided into three paths: a central track for carts and side paths for pedestrians and riders.

A landscape information board along the Voie dite Romaine explains the protected heathland and the ecological, faunistic and floristic significance of a ZNIEFF (Zone naturelle d’intérêt écologique, faunistique et floristique) and an Espace Naturel Sensible.

The products of Charcuterie de Cocagne include fresh sausages, chops, roasts, pork knuckles, pâtés, blood sausages, white sausages, cooked hams and dried sausages.

Charcuterie de Cocagne sells by appointment at the farm, in the laboratory set up there at the “En Charles” farm.
