Villefranche-de-Rouergue was founded in the 13th century as a medieval new town. The bastide was laid out according to a precise grid pattern around a central square. The Pont des Consuls crosses the Aveyron; it connects the bastide with the Faubourg de la République.

Culture
The Chapelle des Pénitents Noirs combines a colourfully painted wooden vault, a gilded altarpiece and six large paintings framed with plaster stucco. The chapel can be visited with an explanatory leaflet, an audio guide, a guided tour, a night-time torchlight tour or a treasure hunt for children.

Getting around
Villefranche-de-Rouergue lies on a variant of the Way of St. James. The section in question runs through Peyrusse-le-Roc, Villeneuve-d’Aveyron, Villefranche, Najac and Cordes-sur-Ciel.
A Stations of the Cross route leads from the Faubourg d’Alzou via the Côte du Calvaire and the former Roman road to the chapels on Saint-Jean-d’Aigremont hill. A visitor route leads down through the pedestrian streets to the banks of the Aveyron.
Villefranche-de-Rouergue railway station is on the Toulouse–Figeac–Aurillac TER railway line and provides direct access from Toulouse.
Local area
The large market in Villefranche-de-Rouergue takes place on Thursday mornings at Place Notre-Dame, around the covered market hall and along the Allées Aristide Briand. Local products and specialities such as Farçous, Fouace, honey, cheese, cured meats and farm eggs are sold.
